Will You Miss It When It Is Gone? Nope!

This picture was taken on Roswell Road in Marietta. If the photographer pivoted to the right he will looking at Miss Georgia Dairy, the future home of The Big Chicken. We can look straight ahead, across the intersection which is and was called The 4-Lane…. And to newcomers who looked on a map it is Cobb Parkway.

This intersection separates North Cobb Parkway (or North 4-Lane) and South Cobb Parkway (or South 4-Lane).

Across the intersection is Roswell Street. The 4-Lane separates Roswell from Street to Road.

On the other side of the road at the corner on the left is a Standard Service Station. Just beyond that is an unpainted wood structure.

I am just guessing, but I think the unpainted wood structure is some sort of warehouse for a small company or a route man of some type. I remember in our neighborhood we had a similar unpainted wood structure that tea route men used as a ware house to come by and pick up stock before going on the road.

Back to this corner and the unpainted wood structure: I rode by that building hundreds of time, maybe thousands, east and west and never thought of it. It was just part of the background.

Then in time it outlived its usefulness and was demolished. Probably other things took it place and other things came and went.

I didn’t even notice it was gone.

Then when I saw this picture my memory glands had a rush. It all came back to me. The unpainted wooden structure looked perfectly natural there and I had my head in a daze I didn’t even miss it until about 55 years later I realized it is gone for ever… now, I will feel guilty I didn't miss it.

Now, in that spot, Los Reys Mexican Restaurant’s parking lot is there, in case you are interested.

NOTE - The below has just been added. Monty Calhoun filled me in with page 2:
The barn in your picture was owned by Mrs. Leech. She was an old widow that would chase us out of there on a daily basis.
Having been raised in Pine Forest, this was one of our adventures that rated right up there
with sleeping on top of Dodd St. School, riding our Flexy Racers in the sewer system, and
shooting cars, at night, with our pea-shooters on the 4 lane highway. Some of our gang,
that you would know: Julian Suggs, Ronnie Witcher, Rupert and Carroll Raines, June Lyle, Nancy Mathis, Jean Baker, Ozzie Huff, Buddy Ball, Neil Taylor, Richard Townsend, Larry Brewer, Dianne Ford, Joe Thomas...and the list goes on.

We get more technical everyday. Why?
I think we get bored with ourselves easily and have to change something.

More CCSI

Pssst! If you have already read the previous post and liked it you need to read it again. I just now went back and added some to the end.

If you read it and didn't like it, don't waste your time, it is same old bull shit.

The Badge of Courage - I Mean Chicken

The above is an official badge of the CCSI (Chicken Crime Scene Investigation Unit). My number is 720, which is just a few numbers away from 007. This is a license to kill. To kill things like chicken hawks, possums, coyotes, rats, and raccoons,

Monty has a chicken coop for his granddaughter Anna. He bought her some baby chicks for Easter. The chickens got bigger and bigger. Deliciously bigger.

You could sense the saliva oozing out of the mouths of all the critters of the night as the chicks became young chickens and their voices changed from peeps to clucks.

The chicks began to disappear. One, then another one…. It was beginning to have the makings of a song like “99 Bottles”… then the balance disappeared at once, leaving nothing but loose feathers and a few clumps of blood.

Chief Investigator Paul Roper visited the crime scene… sniffed around, looked at the what little evidence left… after all, if all the evidence was still there, there would be no crime would there?

Investigator Paul Roper decided for one thing, he wished he badge number 714 just like Jack Webb… another thing, he determined, when the lights of the neighborhood went out the night critters had a buffet.

Of course, Roper conveyed his information on to me before he came to a conclusion and the most advice I had to give him was “Really? You don’t say….?” Also, I am proud to say that my badge number is 720, and if you take the 7 and multiply it by the next digit (2) what does that equal? It equals 14! So, if you take that 14, and keep the first digit (7), you have the number of the much status badge of Jack Webb, 714.

But, back to the case at hand: Investigator Roper conveyed his findings and theories to Monty Calhoun…. Which concentrated is that what Monty needs is a better chicken house. Then he tells Monty the Three Little Pigs Story about two pits make their huts out of straw and the wise practical pig made his house out of bricks…. And the wolf huffed and puffed and couldn’t blow it down.

Then Investigator Roper handed Monty a business card for 3 R Contractors.

A new much stronger chicken coop is being planned and new baby chicks have been ordered.

Did you know it is a must for baby chickens to be shipped when they are one day old? They have just enough body fat to keep them from starving for one day. See, Chicken Fat is good for something!

And do yourself a favor and kindly do not think about the one day old chickens that did not make it to the shipping platform one day one.

Now, are we sure that the chickens were taken by night critters? Could it be…?

Hmmmmm. That made me think (very close up of my face thinking)… last year Inspector Paul Roper and I had lunch several times at Brandi’s Famous Hotdogs….. (now the scene of my face starts waving, like a puddle of still water that just had a tiny pebble tossed into it) and the scene develops into Paul and I sitting at Brandi’s eating chili hotdogs…..

Eddie: If we ever get tired of these hotdogs and we eat lunch at Chic’Fi a let some time.

Paul: Not me! I do not eat chicken! (looking very absolutele)

Eddie: I’ll swap an onion ring for some of yours french fries.

POOF! The next scene is back at the Good Old Boys Meeting. I notice Ivanell (wife of Investigator Roper) very delicately cooking chicken breast strips of the grill. CHICKEN!!! Paul said he DOES NOT EAT CHICKEN!

Another close-up of my face…this time my eyes are bigger and a few nostril hairs are sticking out. I am darting my eyes back and forth at the chicken. Only you the reader know what I am thinking to myself:

“Is the evidence being cooked and eaten in front of our very eyes?”

Fade Out (with Peter Gunn music playing).

Driving Mr. Daisy

Aka Don Rhymer and the chauffer is Jackie Gaskin. He has mounted just outside the window on the driver's side a big loud squeeze-bulb horn that blasts a warning to clear the way - or else

We lived through another week. The Good Old Mixed People met again behind the American Legion with their old friends to celebrate living another week. It was the first time for some.

We drank a beer (or more) to toast another week and got a hold of the barbecue Boston butt and slurp down the Brunswick Stew, both delicious cooked up by Chef Extraordinaire Monty Calhoun.

Also, the Sunbeam bread was pretty good too! I got the bread (now I am throwing my bad shoulder out of place by trying to pat my own back).

And homemade ice cream topped it all off.

One time I counted and I think I counted 28! Wait, it just occurred to me that I did not count myself, so that makes 29 attendees of Good Old Mixed People…. And then more people came and I forgot to count them.

I bet the total was between 35 and 40. I didn’t get a count of how many brought their Bibles… and remember the collection plate, otherwise known as the Kitty Jar.

Some people bought their restored old antique cars. Unfortunately, I only got a picture of Jackie’s Model T. I think about three or four antique cars showed up… and that is not counting my antique 2002 Chevvy pickup (besides the authentic antiques I bet I was the only one there that didn’t have powered windows).

It was relaxing and as always the breeze was nice…. And shooting the breeze was even nicer.

I Think They Both Should Win

Not long ago I heard a man and his son-in-law jokingly argue.

I don’t know who got the first punch in, I think the debate has been carrying on for months, maybe years.

When I picked up on it, it went like this:

One said, “No, you are dumber than I am.”

The other one said, “No, you are dumber than I am”

And the other one cleverly said, “No, you are dumber than I am,”

And then the other one, not to be outwitted or outdone, said, “No, you are dumber than I am!”

And it continued as I walked away.

It is probably still continuing.

You have to give each side credit, each brought up a very vital point that it is hard to argue with.

Outdoor Concert

We went to an outside concert at Kennesaw University last night. Like other things in Marietta it has grown beyond recognition. We haven’t been on the campus for at least a year and found it is easy to get lost or turned around driving on the streets and walking on the walks between the buildings.

There are still buildings and being built and additions – I guess it is a never ending process – and after a while when they run out of space the college will devour itself.

The music was good and relaxing. Tempest is a big band/jazz sound with a female crooner. The female crooner played the sounds she could make with her mouth as a musical instrument... Louis Armstrong used to do the same.

Also, it was not hot. A nice gentle breeze was stirring around, which the band director politely grumbled that a gentle breeze is a band's biggest enemy - they were always grabbing their music sheets.

It didn’t seem as crowded as concerts in the past. Now, they charge admission. I wonder if that shooed some people away? When we walked up to the ticket table the lady smiled and was ready to sell us a ticket. I said, “Two senior tickets.”

She pulled out two tickets off her roll and said, “$10 please”

Anna said, “I thought the regular admission was $5 each.”

She said, “No, regular admission is $10 each. Senior discount is 50% off.” She reached down for her pricing instructions to prove her point and said, “Wait, you are right – you just owe me $5.” Which we paid.

There was maybe 30 to 50 people already there… I wonder if they paid her “special double price?”

We were more than an hour early, so we got to see the bulk of people pour in. That is always interesting – to see what jewels they pull from their picnic baskets – or what elaborate seats they have. A lot of wine was poured. Elegance in what used to be chicken farming country.

What appeared to be a middle age Latino man was the cleanup man. He seemed to be all over area with a sack picking up garbage and replacing garbage sacks in cans. He was a busy bee.

Once, while the band was playing, I notice him on stage, in the back of the band bending over picking up discarded paper cups and wrappers.

Here are a few pictures I taken wandering around the campus. Man, has it changed.

This is probably named after Cobb County's own self-appointed Boss Hawg - Harold Willingham.

My first thought was, "What’s this? A sculpture of Martin Luther King as a Cabbage Patch Kid?"

SUNDAY FUNNIES - FRONTLINE COMBAT #5

psst! click on each page to make it readable.

CSA General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson (1824-1863) was maybe the most respected by his men Confederate Generals in the Civil War. This story tells of Stonewall being mortally wounded by his own men.

This is from EC’s FRONTLINE COMBAT, published about 1952. The story was written by the comic book’s editor, Harvey Kurtzman and drawn by Jack Davis.

As in all of Kurtzman’s war stories he tried to be as historically accurate as possible

This Day in History the Arm Services was Redone

On this date in 1947, the US Air Force, Navy, was formed the U.S. Department of Defense.
And also listed separately, on this date, also in 1947, the US Department of the Army was created.

That is confusing but I think it is all inter-related.

After thinking about it. Just after the War, in the mid 1940s, one young man came out of the war named Gene P.

Next to the Clay Homes the government built a training school for freshly released G.I.s to train them in a trade so they could live productive lives.

Gene drove a motor scooter. Near the trade school he would gather all us kids around him in the Clay Homes. He sat on his motor scooter and told one daring adventure after another. In every story he was the hero…he rescued captured Americans, he killed Germans right and left… . he just about ran the whole war himself.

So why did they need those other soldiers?

The best I can figure it, Gene was probably released from active duty around 1944 or 1945. It took the U.S. Government about two years, until 1947, to realize that they didn’t have Gene there anymore. They were going to have to organized things to replaced Gene so the Department of Defense did a lot of reorganizing so we could feel safe again.

What we didn't know was that Gene returned from the war shell shocked. For years and years after that I saw Gene always in the care of his parents, and all three of them getting older and older.

The Vehicles Some of Us Drove Back Then…

And some of us walked, rode with our parents, or hitched.

These are pictures of vehicles copied from the Marietta High School yearbook The Olympia for six years, from 1955 to 1960.

Back then it was not that unusual to see a Model T come rattling down the street and a jalopy whip around a corner with loud mufflers. And cruising with the top down would be Johnny Cool, or Richie Rich wheeling his brand new wheels.

Of course jeeps are universal. They have been around attracting teenagers ever since I remember.

For those of us who remember Shaw’s BBQ must remember the 4-Lane and how it used to look. In the background of the Shaw’s had is the 4-Lane, and across the street, which looks like just the edge of another long disappeared pasture.

One of the pictures shows the brand new shiny Edsel in the show room. I guess the old saying “Get one while they last” had some truth in it.

The next to the last picture is a cut-down I forgot what. Betty G. is driving it. I talked to her recently and if I remember correctly she told me it was still in the family.

The last picture with the girls sitting in a convertible at Miss Georgia Dairies – that was the future of home of the famous BIG CHICKEN.
