This is my Ridley genealogy continued. The first person, Alexander Ridley, you will note, moved to Lumpkin County, Georgia. Dahlonega is in Lumpkin County. About 15 or so years ago I read in the North Georgia Journal magazine of a huge rose farm in Dahlonega owned by the Ridley family. In 2001 I was giving my friend Bluto a tour of north Georgia and while in Dahlonega I asked around to find out where the Ridley Rose Farm location was. I was told that an Asian company bought it and the Ridleys moved retired to Florida.

Notes for ALES PRICE RIDLEY:
Family tradition is that Ales and his two brothers Charles Martin and Elisha Asa came south in the early 1830's driving horses.
Ales enlisted as a bugler or musician in Captain Meredith Price's Company, in the Battalion of Jackson County Mounted Volunteers of Alabama, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel David Cawlfield.
On October 20, 1837, Ales enlisted with Captain Sever Boulton's Company G, N. Alabama Mounted Volunteers, under Colonel Benjamin Snodgrass, as a Sergeant Express Courier. He was honorably discharged on 9 April 1838 at Fort Mitchell, Alabama and listed as disabled with pleurisy. Remarks noted: Horse lost or stolen March 19, remounted himself March 20."
For his service Ales received on January 6, 1843, a land grant for 295.5 acres of land in Jackson County, Alabama.
His wife taught him how to read and write after they were married.
After the war he settled in Franklin, Heard County, Georgia, where his brother Charles Martin Ridley was living.
It is said that in 1886 Ales was visiting his daughter, Sophronia, in Bridgeport, Alabama. While crossing the Tennessee River his horse stumbled and fell, causing Ales to break his hip. Complications and pneumonia developed and he died. His body was sent back to Heard County, Ga., for burial.

Thanks for sharing this! I am descended from James N. Ridley through his son, Adam. His wife was Elizabeth Medlin who was born 14 Sept. 1846 in SC and died 13 March 1925 in West Union, SC. I haven't been able to locate Adam's Death Certificate, but know he must have died sometime between 1900 and 1925 (Liza's D.C. says 'widowed'). Where did you find out that James N's father was Charles? Would love to see a source to add to my records.
