On a previous posting comment Suzanne asked what was a pie safe. I don't know. But here is a picture of one that used to be owned by Anna's grandmother or great-grandmother .
It is beautiful, Eddie. A pie safe was where they put pies to cool away from flies and bugs. The pierced panels in the doors allowed air to circulate, but kept the bugs away.
We had a pie safe when I was a little boy. Not only pies but all left overs were put in it as we had no refrigerator. It was always good for a cold biscuit or a piece of cornbread when you were hungry between meals.
Reuben, I bet that souse meat wrapped in white paper you brought aboard the USS Newport News sat in your family's pie safe for a short time before you left with it.
This is great! Thank you Eddie for posting the picture, Kenju for explaining what it is, and Button for also admitting to not knowing what it was. Go team!

ReplyDeleteJudy,
ReplyDeleteThank you, the holes make sense. I figured there was some practical explanation.

Wow, that's a nice piece of furniture. And don't worry, Suzanne, because I didn't know what it was either.
ReplyDeleteButton,
ReplyDeleteWell, we have one and I still didn't know. I thought it was a place to hide stuff in that you didn't want just lying around.

ReplyDeleteMe part of a team? I am carried away with myself!
