We saw the movie CAPOTE tonight. It was about Truman Capote and his investigated reporting style of a slaying of four people of the same family in Kanaas. Truman wrote a much publicized book "IN COLD BLOOD" which was more grabbing than his other best seller, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman did an excellent job playing the part of the very effeminate Capote... and I couldn't help admire the character Harper Lee, who was Truman's running buddy, who was dealing with her own book to be published about then, "To Kill a Mockingbird".
Years ago, on a trip to New York City in the early '70s my wife and I went to the Dick Cavett Show and one of his guests was Truman Capote. Also on the same show another guest was Lester Maddox, the governor of Georgia at the time. He and Truman had words - and for months afterwards Lester would do his famous imitation of Capote, with his tiny little glasses on and his whiney effeminate voice. It was an embarrassment for Georgia.
Also that same night or another night we were there, they all blend in after over 30 years, Carrie Snodgrass was there plugging her movie "Diary of a Mad Housewife" but that has nothing to do with this post.
To get back to my impression of the movie, it was all about Greed spelled with a capital G. Truman Capote made friends with the killers on death row just to get details of the murders and the murders murdered looking for money in the house.
My wife has been trying to get me to read "In Cold Blood" for years now, I don't suppose she will settle for me listening to the Mancini album "Breakfast At Tiffany's".
CAPOTE was a good movie.
