1954 Marietta Yellow Pages Es

I don’t have many memories of around 1954 about electrical places. But on the first page are some electricity-related companies to stir up someone’s memories – maybe.

On the second page of the Es is McGaughey Tractor Company in Elizabeth. I remember that place. They always had some nice looking big tractors on display.

The second part of the second page flows into the Fs. I see Southern Discount Company on Roswell Street listed. Southern Discount sponsored the Little League team I was on for two years (I carefully avoided the words “played on” – I spent almost all my time on the bench drawing in the dirt with a stick).

Under Fisherman’s Supplies is Wilson Bros Jewelers. I first wondered why would a jewelry company sell fishing supplies. Reading closer I see they sold fishing lures. Now, it makes more sense. And also throw in that one of the Wilson Brothers were Joe Mac Wilson, future Marietta Mayor, who marched to his own drummer, then it didn’t have to make sense.

As you can plainly see, only two Five & Ten Cent Stores are listed. One is Irving’s 5 & 10 Cent Store on West Park Square. It seems they were always having a “Going Out of Business” sale – for years. The son, John looked something like Slugo in the cartoon strip Nancy. He went to Marietta High, a couple years ahead of me.

McClellan’s 5¢ & 10¢ on South Park Square next to the Book Store is not listed and it was the biggest. I suppose they felt their bigness was all the advertising they needed.

Jerry McB & Me

Jerry is an old high school friend.

The first time I saw Jerry after many years was at the post office in about 1988. He was the customer and I was the window clerk. Whatever transaction he made he wrote a check. I recognized the name and did a double take on him. It was Jerry alright. He aged as we all had but still probably considered good looking. He recognized me too – after I told him. We had a nice quick catching up chat. After all, there were people in line behind him.

Jerry was about two or three years younger than me. When I was a sophomore in high school and he came in as a freshmen the female students of all grades swooned. Seniors girls were flirting with him and hinting to him for a date. He was that good looking.

He was also a good high school athletic. He was humbled, witty, and probably was something of a hell raiser – that is probably how I got to know him.

I remember in high school he had a nice cut-down T-Bird… I think it was red or maybe white. I remember one time on a curvy road near Allatoona Lake he slid on some gravel and turned over.

It has been proven many times that good looking people get preferential treatment and eye-sores like me generally get ignored (how else do you think I became invisible?).
So, I am sure through his life Jerry has enjoyed the benefits of preferential treatment because of his looks. But, as humble and appreciative as he is, I don’t think he expected it.

The next time I saw Jerry after the post office was the past New Year’s Eve at the Strand Theater after the Billy Joe Royal Concert. He was in a wheel chair. I spoke to him and he spoke back and smiled real big, but I realized his speech was limited.

I found out then by that Jerry had a series of strokes and now resided in a rest home.

The next time I saw Jerry was at the Varner’s Reunion. He was awarded a certificate of being Marietta’s Most Famous Lover or something of that effect.

You could tell by his radiant smile and enthusiastic expression when greeting people he was happy to be at the Varner’s Reunion. Paul Roper told me he picked him up at the nursing home he is at and Sandy carried him back.

A couple of months ago my mother-n-law became very ill. She spent several weeks in the hospital. When she was released she was very weak. She had to regain her strength to live normally. She went to a nursing home for physical rehabilitation.

I was telling Paul about my mother-in-law at the nursing home and he said that was the same nursing home Jerry McB was in.

The next day while Anna visited with her mother I tracked down Jerry.

He seemed glad to see me. When I walked into his room he was sitting in a wheel chair very close to his TV watching the news.

He shares a room with an old sour looking fart that never spoke to me when I spoke to him… never smiled…anything. I know the old man can talk. I heard him talking to a nurse before.

Jerry told me very well, using mime motions to tell me he had two strokes which hit half of his body. He can say some words – mostly enough to lead you but it would be an ordeal to speak a paragraph. He had a bulletin board with pictures and newspaper articles all over it. It fact, it overlapped the bulletin board onto the wall…. Like memories overflowing into the present world.

What Jerry can not say, he can mime expressions and hand movements to get across what he wants to say.

He showed me in his storage area maybe 6 to 10 stiff portable bulletin boards he is working on. The whole wall is a work in progress site. Also, in his storage area are many cut out newspaper articles. Below is a poster he is working on.

On a hard surface he had a white sheet of paper he was making a map of Marietta. He or somebody had drawn lines to represent the main thorough-fare streets. At one intersection was a tiny little BIG CHICKEN drawn. Then I knew that was at the northeast corner of Roswell Road and the 4-Lane. In his own way he asked me to label some streets that were there, which I did.

I thought he would probably like a copy on an old map of Marietta, dated about 1965. I have one so I printed him off one. I also printed him off the 1958 aerial photo of downtown Marietta and a bunch of photos of our friends at the Bell Gang Reunion and the Varner’s Reunion.

The next day or so I delivered them to him. When I walked in he had the Marietta Journal spread out on his bed and bent over reading it.

He was very appreciative of the stuff I bought. And we both had an emotional moment. He was very happy and appreciative to receive all the memories I brought and I was happy he was happy.

On one visit I went in and he was not there. I said to the sour old fart, “Jerry not here?” He just looked at me, non expressive. I suppose he could have said, “What do you think?” So, maybe he is nicer than I thought.

As I was leaving the room going back into the hallway Jerry was wheeling towards me in a rush. We visited for a while and he and I went over the pictures I gave him previously.

He was wearing a Bell Gang t-shirt with the Bell Theater on it. He told me his son got it for him.

Then he said he needed to eat. Sure. I figured out after a few visits that he visits a lot with an elderly lady up the hall one door, on the other side. He was dining with her when he saw me walk by.

A little preteen female volunteer came in and asked him what kind of ice cream he wanted. He shook his head, “none”. A few moments later a nurse or an aid came in and said, “Jerry, you OK? You always want ice cream!” He helm-hawed around and I figured the only reason he turned down the ice cream was that he didn’t want to eat in front of me.

I told him I had to go anyway. I should have said, “Well, give it to me then, I hate for that good ice cream go to waste!”

My mother-in-law figured out who Jerry is and said she has seen him several times in the dining room showing the pictures I printed off for him to different older women patients.

About a day after he received the pictures I was there when he showed two different nurses…. Each was very interested and asked questions. The first nurse seemed to have even got a little huffy when she looked at one of the girls Jerry dated in high school… I could tell she was thinking, “What does that gal have I don’t have? Hmmffff!”

From years of experience Jerry is a natural charmer.

Several times as I walked in his room he had the pictures all spread out on his made-up bed and he was trying to arrange them in some kind of order. I think for over a week he was completely focused on those pictures.

Twice when I dropped by he was outside reclined in the nursing home’s little park absorbing the sun. At the top is a picture of one of these moments.

If you know Jerry from your high school days I think he would like to see you again. And if you have any pictures of friends and old Marietta that you would like to share with him, I know he will appreciate it.

This is Goodman Beaver from HELP magazine Number 2, May 1962, written by Harvey Kurtzman and illustrated by Will Elder. This was almost ten years after the first issue of MAD comicbook was published, which was also created by Kurtzman.

Kennesaw Mountain and Marietta

I took this picture from the top of the County Deck. You can see some of the steeples on Church Street and Kennesaw Mountain looming in the background.

The mountain is about one and half to two miles away. It isn't far away. During the second week of June, 1864, a part of the Civil War was fought on and points near the mountain. The North had a couple thousand casualties and the South had about 600.

People in downtown Marietta could hear the rage of war. They said it sounded like popcorn popping.

Death In Threes Rule

It happened again. Three celebrities died. Ed McMann, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael Jackson.

I'm sure you heard the old belief that when one star dies two more die... or the rule of Three Celebrities Death Rule.

Michael Jackson was the last. I bet there were a whole of celebrities, when hearing of Michael Jackson’s death said, “Whew!”

That got me wondering. Maybe the Death in Threes rule is not limited to celebrities. Maybe it is just more noticeable because they are celebrities.

Maybe Ed McMann was one of three that died that day that wore a hair piece. and maybe he was also one of three that died that had a deformed toenail… it goes on and on.

And the same with Farrah Fawcett. Maybe she was also one and three who had been abused by their spouses and so on.

And no telling what else Michael Jackson was one in three in… I see right now, I better stop.

Wednesday Is Senior Discount Day

We woke up early this morning with plans of cramming a lot in.

By 8am we were hurrying through Krogers Grocery Store shuffling coupons and looking for free samples. It wasn’t very crowded. I asked the cashier where were all the customers. She told me they were playing Bingo. She said Wednesday mornings they have Bingo for seniors. By 8:30 we had got; our 5% Senior Discount and out of there. Who care about Bingo?

We carried my truck to the dealer to have service.

While the truck was being serviced we went to a movie at the Town Center AMC Theater to see ANGELS AND DEMONS, directed by Ron Howard, starring Tom Hanks and written by Dan Brown.

It was very good. Some people think ANGELS AND DEMONS and THE DIVINCI CODE both are sacra religious but I don’t think so. It more or less asks questions of symbols that have been accepted as divine messages from God. I am now reading another Dan Brown novel DECEPTION POINT and all three has something in common. They are all super chase stories that challenge authority and there is a matter of urgency that is about 24 hours or less that if failed, might end the world as we know it… how’s that for urgency?

We have an AMC card and sometimes get little door prizes for using it. Today we got one ticket to a future movie and two bags of popcorn…. Not bad.

The parking lot was full. This was at 10:30 am, which I think is very unusual for a weekday. I ask the guy who waited on us at the concession stand why the parking lot was so full he said this is the first day of TRANSFORMERS. Then he backed up and said, “Well actually, it was last night at midnight.”

I thought, “Today or last night at midnight – I’ll take either answer.”

However the theater we went in had only five people, including us. Of course we were the first ones there. After us was a couple that seemed to be struggling with crutches or walkers. Then an elderly lady was the last.

The movie was very fast pace.. you could hear the music like a nervous heart thumping but it was also very visual. At one point, the sky lit up like the wrath of God. It kept us on the edge of our seats.

After the movie was over we were watching the credits like we sometimes do and I heard the metal walking sticks or walker make their racket slowly making their way down the steps.

When they got even with us I saw they were blind with feeler sticks. That is why they were slow, they were on steps, and didn’t want to step into nothing. They felt their way to the bottom and around the left edge and tried to go out. They couldn’t. Then they felt their way around front to they came to the next front corner and tried to go out. No exit there either. Then they felt their way forward on the other side and found their way out.

Why were they sitting in a movie?

The old lady came down from behind us. Somehow we started talking about the blind couple and wondered why a blind couple would go to the movies. And then as we talked we walked out and were somewhat surprised that her hair was colored red, blue, and purple. She looked five or ten years older than us.

We stopped at the restrooms. I went into the men’s restroom and there was the blind man washing his hands. I wonder how he found the men’s restroom? And then, how did he find the urinal? And was he a good shot?

As I went around the corner to pee and he was in the front part washing his hands I remembered hearing that when someone loses their eyesight their other senses are more sensitive. Did he hear us commenting about he and his blind female partner in a movie theater… being blind…and commenting about them feeling their way out? And, did he recognize my “smell”? My dog can, surely a blind man kind. I halfway expected him to suddenly appear behind me and start whacking me with his metal cane.

But then I heard the cane making clicks like it was leaving the area.

Later we saw both of them and their walking sticks feeling their way towards the exit door.

We wondered what they used for transportation to and from the theater.

We had a late lunch at Slopes BBQ. They give senior discounts too! I think I put too much hot sauce on mine. My nose ran, it always does when I put too much hot stuff on my barbecue.

The Invisible Man Got 2 Phone Calls

Thursday or Friday last week I received a phone call from my friend J. He wanted some information he thought I might be able to furnish. It turned out that I couldn’t. While talking about other matters suddenly J said he was getting a call on the other line he had to take, he would call me right back.

I waited.

I waited some more.

The next day we had to go shopping and to the doctor. I was hesitant to go thinking J. might call while I was gone.

Wait! I will just have the calls forwarded to my cell phone, so if J calls I will get on the cell phone. No problem! It was even less of a problem because J didn’t call.

No did he call the next day or the next.

On Tuesday my friend P called. P and I talked a while and he said he was getting another call in, from M. He said he would call me right back.

Anna wanted to use the phone and I asked her to wait because P was to call me right back.

I waited and I waited.

Then I thought what if J and P call at the same time? I promised both them I would be waiting by the phone.

Maybe I better get a phone with two lines I thought.

Then, it was time to go to the Tuesday afternoon Good Old Boy Get Together.

J and P were both at the get together and they were not on the phone… but during the course of the next hour or two I think they both were on their cell phones from time to time…. maybe they didn’t see me (I’m invisible) and they both were trying to call me.

Good Old Girls (and boys)

This evening was our Good Old Boy meeting. But it changed. It is now a Good Old Boys and Good Old Girls Meeting.

Remember reading, when you were younger, of course, Marge’s LITTLE LULU. Little Lulu had a friend named Tubby. Tubby belonged to a neighborhood club exclusively for boys his age. On their clubhouse scrawled were the words “NO GIRLS ALLOWED”.

Well, we are not in a LITTLE LULU comicbook. And, as I was told once, “After all, we are in a new century.

We have gone coed.

Not long ago at one of our meeting two old friends met and one asked the other where he has been and he, shaking the other one’s hand, said he was in the parking lot masturbating “With this hand.” he added still shaking his friend’s hand.

Another time one, J of us told us in the group that he put his finger up to the nose of H, and he got a whiff of just how unclean J's date was and almost turned H's stomach.

Another time someone announced that a certain person there had the biggest penis of anybody there.

I doubt if the above three paragraphs would have happened at a coed meeting.

Monty and his better half Kay cooked up with the help of their pasta maker a big batch of spaghetti and a great beefy sauce with garlic bread. It was all delicious.

There was about six or seven women there. One of them, Sandy, got my plate for me. Then she did for another male. And another female was doing the same for other males. So! That is why the women were invited! To wait on us men! Suddenly it all made sense! Who said the old southern ways are dead?

No, I am just joking. I enjoyed the lady-folk there. Women are very good at keeping the conversation flowing and interesting.

Steve “Thunder” Tumlin did not show up as he led some of us to believe. Maybe he read this blog last week where I said the joke was on him, there are not that many of us who lived in the city limits… only two or three.

Well, Steve, I think I miscalculated – there are about four to six more in one family that I didn’t count… and a whole thrust of people came that haven’t came before. I don’t know where they live. A whole lot of hands to shake.

Besides that Thunder, you missed Monty’s delicious homemade spaghetti.

A Morning of An Evening With Johnny Mercer

On Willow and my walk this morning I listened to An Evening with Johnny Mercer. During this recording session Johnny Mercer must have been at a piano and talked what came to mind as he played his songs. He would tell a little experiences or talks which suddenly inspired him to write timeless musical pieces.

That got me thinking about Johnny Mercer. Duh! Johnny Mercer is another Georgian we can be proud of. He was born and raised in Savannah.

We toured his house in Savannah once. People, us included, were not touring it because it use to belong to Johnny Mercer, but another time belonged to Jim Williams, of MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL fame.

Not long ago I mentioned Roy Rogers singing I’M AN OLD COWHAND (FROM THE RIO GRANDE). I learned this morning that Johnny wrote that song and what inspired him and where. He spent a couple days in Texas traveling from Hollywood to Savannah.

While in Savannah that time I spent hours in the Bonaventure Cemetery doing some genealogy cemetery digging. I came across the Mercer plot. See above.

Another unsung (pardon the pun) hero, or song writer-poet from Georgia is Joe South. The song I think of that he wrote instantly is GAMES PEOPLE PLAY. Joe is from here in Cobb County, Smyrna to be exact.

1954 Marietta Yellow Pages Ds

Not all the Ds are here. I put what other Ds in a previous post when I ran something on the Marietta drug stores.

Be sure to click on each page to be able to read it - if you want to.

Humpty Dumpty Nursery was on South Cobb Drive across from WFOM Radio Station. It was owned by the Atterholt family. Their son was a co-worker of mine at the Marietta Post Office.

Above Dentist Dr. Carpenter is listed. His office was above Office Sales and Service. I think he and his wife owned the building and I think she owned Office Sales and Service.

Back in the 1950s smoking was not that much of a taboo. Movie Stars smoked, newsmen smoke… smoking even hinted that you were an intellectual. I think I will always remember Dr. Carpenter bent over me working on my mouth with his teeth clinching a smoking cigar.

Under department stores are the Marietta retail fixtures on the Square at the time, Leiters Goldsteins’. Millers’, and Florence’s.

I think the boots and the Levis were in the basement. It was a very organized store, everything so orderly displayed.

Goldsteins was about the same.

I was always impressed with the pneumatic tubes that money and receipts charged around in little at Millers.

Florence’s was a women clothing store. A place I don’t remember frequenting.

Do you think you could find eggs and poultry in the Yellow Pages today? And after finding them and see where their location is drive out and buy you a couple dozen eggs? I doubt it. Back then, no problem. I remember us as a family rode the car down Atlanta Road and buying eggs at a farm with a few big chicken houses. It might have been M.N. Turner, advertised above.

Interesting Animal Facts, or I thought So Anyway

Here are a couple of interesting animal facts that was Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader page-a-day calendar to ponder over:

Billy Goats urinate on their own heads to attract a mate. It didn't say "How".

Rats can find their way through a maze quicker when Mozart is being played.

SUNDAY FUNNIES - MAD #7 - Sherlock Holmes

click on each page to see the details and read the balloons.

I thought we would change things a bit.

On Sunday Funnies when I did a MAD comic I would pretty much show every story so you would know pretty much what the whole comic was.

Enough of that! After thinking about it, running the whole comic is overwhelming for you to read page by page.

Now, with MAD comics, until I change it again, only one story will be presented. This shouldn’t overwhelm you as much and more importantly, it allows me to stretch my MAD comics over a longer period of time.

This is MAD #7. The cover was drawn by editor Harvey Kurtzman, which is reference to the comic’s first story, which is here, a take-off on Sherlock Holmes by illustrated by Will Elder.

Also on the inside cover MAD subscription hard-sell is by Will Elder.

The story is absolutely cluttered with Elder’s chicken-fat wit. Every panel has little jokes piled on top of other jokes. For instance, after Sherlock was playing the violin and removes his look-alike dummy from the window we see in the background the dummy with his hands over his ears – which I interpreted to be that even the dummy couldn’t stand Sherlock’s violin music. But it doesn’t plainly say that. You have to think.

Take it away, Bill!

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!

Krazy Kat Met the Public on this Date

On this date, June 20, in 1910 "Krazy Kat" comic strip by George Herriman debuted in NY Journal.

The best I can tell, many times the rat hit the poor Kat in the back of the head with a brick. I guess in early days of comics the punch line was kept simple. Apparently a sharp pain in the back of the head must have been hilarious, providing it was happening to someone else

A Pleasant Breeze

Earlier this week Anna and I visited a person in a nursing home. The nursing home structure is almost like a fort. There are for long halls, which form a square. In the middle is a small park. You can sit outside in the little small park which gives the appearance of being about the the size of a baseball diamond.

There are a few trees, a few chairs, a couple of rocking chairs, a wooden swing, and bird feeders. And there are chirping birds. It is a nice peaceful setting.

Remember, the little park is surrounded by four wings of the nursing home. You cannot walk out of there without first going through a door back into a hall of the nursing home.

We were sitting and talking and I noticed a breeze. It was not strong enough to be a gushy wind… just a pleasant continuous breeze.

How did the breeze get there? It was surrounded by buildings. Was it traveling 30 feet above the ground and swoop down when it came to an opened area. Or was it traveling along the ground and then leaped the building and landed onto the ground of the small park and continued its journey?

The nursing home is of old people, a lot are sickly. Maybe the breeze are spirits of those who died inside the nursing home and they are just seeking human organic warmth.

Postscript: There is a nursing home in Marietta that is named Autumn Breeze. Hmmmm?

Politician = Good Old Boy

Monty Calhoun announced that Potential Marietta Mayor Steve “Thunder” Tumlin will be at the next Good Old Boys meeting Tuesday evening.

Monty must have done some slick talking, fibbing, stretching the truth to get Mr. Tumlin to make such a commitment. Monty might have told him that hundreds of Marietta voters usually attend….

Or maybe he heard of Monty’s culinary skills.

On this Date in 1812

On this date in 1812 the United States declared War on England.

The War of 1812.

There were two memorable inspirations because of this war.

Watching the fire power and explosions in the Baltimore Harbor Francis Scott Keys was inspired to write the Star Spangled Banner. Which was a good thing.

General Andrew "Old Hickory" Jackson heroic leadership in battle inspired the people of the United States to vote him in as 7th President of the United States. Andrew Jackson was a hothead who is known for horse racing, being a bitter loser, and settling his differences with a duel. He was a good shot.
